Dental Tourism

Smile Upgrade Alert: Before You Go the Extra Mile, Consider These!

Overview

The rise of social media and the glamourous appeal of a perfect smile have heightened our awareness of dental aesthetics.

As a result, an increasing number of people are seeking low-cost dental treatments abroad, becoming 'dental tourists.' However, while these sunny destinations may seem attractive, caution is essential.

Several countries have emerged as popular dental tourism destinations, including Turkey, India, and Hungary, offering dental care at significantly lower costs.

But, before you embark on a dental vacation, it is crucial to consider the risks associated with travelling for dental treatment. Despite thorough research, there is no guarantee of receiving high-quality dental care, making it essential to weigh the potential pros and cons carefully.

Standards

Standards for foreign dentists and foreign dental practices may not be the same as the ones in the UK. Infection control standards can vary widely from country to country. The UK has some of the highest standards in the world, reinforced by inspection and audit. In some country's dentists may reuse gloves, instruments or even reuse needles all of which puts patient safety at risk.

Language

Language barriers are another potential problem with dental tourism. Dentists in many foreign countries speak poor or little English, which makes communication difficult. Misunderstandings can occur and may be problematic. Good communication is essential with your dentist to receive the best treatment.

Cost

We're all aware that the cost of dental treatment plays a huge part in seeking treatment abroad, but remember the saying “you get what you pay for”. There are many reasons why dental costs are less expensive abroad, partially a lower labour cost but materials and  implant fixtures may be cheap Asian copies.

In the UK, all dental practices and dental laboratories are regulated, audited and inspected. In many countries they are not. This can lead to problems due to poor workmanship and lower quality materials being used. Dentists in the UK have compulsory insurances should anything go wrong and a procedure for handling problems. Other countries do not have systems with the same back up and support for patients in place.

Education / Training

The UK is recognized for its quality of dental training. UK dentists must complete 5 years of undergraduate study, then enter a (vocational training) scheme, of either 1 or 2 years, to receive their full registration. UK dentists must register with the G.D.C. (General Dental Council), and meet their requirements as the governing body of the profession before being allowed to practice. Some countries do not have the same training standards as the UK.

Lastly Don’t believe the hype!

We have all seen the ads on Instagram and Facebook of a reality TV star jetting off to have their new veneers fitted. Remember the cast of Love Island are not dentists, they have been paid to visit and promote the treatment at these clinics. The best person to seek advice from is your dentist, we have seen the many horror stories and problems that come with patients that have had treatment abroad.
